Scratch resistance is a key performance requirement in UV-curable coatings, inks, and adhesives used for wood, plastics, 3C electronics, automotive interiors, and PVC/SPC flooring. However, achieving a durable, mark-resistant surface depends on more than selecting a resin described as “high hardness” or “scratch resistant.” The final result is influenced by resin chemistry, cross-link density, monomer selection, additives, substrate compatibility, and curing conditions.

What Determines Scratch Resistance in UV Coatings?

UV resin is a major film-forming component that affects hardness, flexibility, adhesion, curing behavior, and surface durability. Higher-functionality resins can create a denser cross-linked structure, potentially improving hardness and resistance to surface marking. However, excessive cross-linking may reduce flexibility and increase brittleness, especially on flexible substrates.

A successful formulation must balance hardness and flexibility according to the application. Glass and metal coatings may require a harder film, while leather, TPU, and flexible plastic substrates need sufficient elasticity to prevent cracking or surface damage during bending. Monomers, photoinitiators, pigments, fillers, and functional additives also influence the final coating properties.

Curing method is another important factor. Mercury UV, UV LED, excimer, and dual-cure systems may produce different curing depths, surface hardness, and cross-linking behavior. Incomplete curing or uneven energy distribution can reduce scratch resistance even when the selected resin has strong performance potential.

Lencolo UV Resin Options for Scratch-Resistant Applications

Guangdong Lencolo New Material Co., Ltd., operating under the Lencolo brand, offers UV-curable resin families for coatings, inks, adhesives, flooring, electronics, and specialty surface finishes. The following products can serve as starting points for application-specific formulation development.

Polyurethane Acrylates for Hardness and Wear Resistance

Several polyurethane acrylate grades combine scratch resistance with other performance requirements. L-6207 provides a balance of wear resistance and flexibility, with fast curing and documented RCA resistance exceeding 200 times. It is suitable for evaluating applications involving 3C coatings, glass, plastic, and PVD surfaces.

L-6240 is an LED-curable resin designed for high hardness, high gloss, high cross-link density, and scratch resistance. It can be considered for coatings, inks, adhesives, OPV, plastic, paper, and nail applications.

For flooring and plastic coatings, L-6316 combines leveling, fullness, fast response, and scratch resistance. L-6360 offers wetting performance, scratch resistance, slipperiness, anti-yellowing properties, and toughness for PVC flooring, paper, plastic, and wood coatings. L-6365 focuses on fast curing, scratch resistance, and substrate adhesion.

Matte Resins for Mark-Resistant Surfaces

Matte coatings require a careful balance between low gloss, surface uniformity, and resistance to scratching or visible marks. L-6380A is positioned for a gloss range of approximately 5°–10°, high hardness, and good scratch resistance, while maintaining a smooth soft-touch surface. Related grades, including L-6380A-4 and L-6380A-10, offer additional low-odor or anti-yellowing characteristics.

L-6380M is an anti-scratch matte resin designed for a stable low-gloss finish of approximately 1°–3° without haze. Its compatibility, leveling, and adhesion properties should be evaluated together with the selected matting system and substrate.

High-Performance and Specialty Resin Families

For more demanding abrasion requirements, L-6900 offers high weather resistance, yellowing resistance, and scratch resistance. L-6902 and L-6902X, both high-functionality grades, reference steel wool resistance exceeding 5,000 cycles, together with weatherability and yellowing resistance.

The L-6905 series extends scratch and surface-protection considerations to anti-graffiti and anti-fingerprint coatings for plastics and films. For dual-cure applications, L-8469 is positioned for steel wool resistance, fast surface drying, low shrinkage, and high hardness in applications such as inks, mobile phone glass, and automotive interiors.

Specialty applications may require different performance priorities. L-8320 combines soft-touch properties with scratch and wear resistance. Excimer grades such as L-6367 series are designed for soft skin-feel surfaces, while L-8461 combines a fine matte texture with elasticity, weather resistance, and scratch resistance. For nail coatings, L-8443 is positioned as a topcoat resin offering high hardness, low shrinkage, and scratch resistance.

Why Application Testing Is Essential

No resin should be considered a universal solution based only on its product description. Scratch resistance depends on film thickness, formulation ratios, monomer reactivity, additive compatibility, substrate, coating method, and curing energy.

Formulators should evaluate scratch or abrasion performance alongside adhesion, flexibility, gloss, chemical resistance, yellowing, surface appearance, and curing completeness. Lencolo products can be used as candidate materials during comparative trials, but final selection should be confirmed through testing under actual customer conditions.

A systematic approach that connects resin functionality, application requirements, substrate characteristics, and curing technology helps formulators develop UV coatings with more reliable scratch resistance and overall surface performance.
