Flange Repair at a Chemical Plant: A Case of Inverted Machining

Flange maintenance on the lower section of spherical storage tanks in chemical plants presents unique challenges. Unlike standard flange repairs, where surfaces are easily accessible, all flanges on the bottom of these tanks face downward, making installation and machining more complex. Additionally, the restricted workspace further complicates operations, requiring compact and precisely controlled equipment. Ensuring the safe and secure installation of machining tools in this inverted position is crucial, as any instability could lead to serious risks. To tackle these challenges, specialized on-site machining solutions are essential to maintain the highest safety and precision standards.

MT Portable Machine's highly skilled field machining team recently conducted on-site flange face repairs on the bottom flanges of a spherical storage tank using two of their top-performing machines-the FI26E Flange Facer and the FE12E Flange Facer. The simultaneous operation of these two machines, as captured in our field images, demonstrates the efficiency and reliability of our equipment in challenging environments.

The FI26E Flange Facer, with its servo motor drive, eliminates the need for an unreliable air supply or heavy hydraulic power units, making it particularly well-suited for confined spaces. Its aerospace-grade aluminum alloy construction provides an optimal balance between strength and reduced weight, making high-altitude and inverted machining operations significantly safer.

Meanwhile, the FE12E Flange Facer, designed for smaller flanges, ensures high-precision machining even in tight spaces. Its lightweight and compact structure allow it to be installed with ease while maintaining the highest performance standards.

A critical aspect of this operation was the secure and stable installation of the flange facers. Our team employed hydraulic jacks to assist in mounting the equipment, a technique that significantly enhanced safety and ensured stable machining throughout the process. This innovative approach not only improved operational safety but also set a benchmark for inverted machining in challenging environments. This project serves as an excellent case study in safe and efficient flange maintenance under extreme conditions.

Oil & Gas Applications of Skid-Mounted Units: A Complete Overview

In the fast-paced and technically demanding world of the oil and gas industry, efficiency, modularity, and safety are non-negotiable. Skid-mounted units—modular, self-contained systems installed on a steel frame or “skid”—have become indispensable in upstream, midstream, and downstream operations. As a pioneer in the development and manufacturing of skid-mounted pilot plants, […]
